What is a Child and Family Investigator (CFI)?

A Child and Family Investigator (CFI) in the state of Colorado are court-appointed professionals assisting families experiencing conflict. The Child and Family Investigator is a neutral third party that is to investigate, report, and make recommendations to the court on issues that affect the best interests of the minor children involved in a domestic relations case.

What is the purpose of a CFI investigation?

The purpose of this investigation is to provide a brief assesment that is non-intrussive, efficient, and cost effective. This independent prospective will assist the judge with the facts of the case.

What kind of duties will the CFI have?

The Court will specify the duties in the written order that appoints the individual CFI. These duties may include ultimate issues of parenting time and decision making authority or may be restricted to more specific issues, as the Court may determine.

Who will the CFI represent?

The CFI will represent the minor children’s best interests. They will not represent the mother or the father.

Why would I need a CFI?

Most cases do not require the services of a CFI. However, when there are insurmountable issues that cannot be resolved between the two parents, or if there are issues, which the judge believes he/she needs an extra set of eyes and ears to resolve, a CFI can be very helpful in the resolution.

A CFI will conduct an investigation and report the facts of the case to the court with recommendations in the child’s best interest based upon C.R.S. 14-10- 124.5. This written report will be distributed to the court and all parties prior to the permanent orders hearing.

The CFI will conduct the investigation by examining the relationship between the parents and their child, including talking with all persons who have significant interaction with the child. This could include teachers, daycare providers, significant others of the respective parents, other relatives such as grandparents, doctors, therapists, and counselors. The CFI will come to your home to insure that everything is safe and suitable for the child.

You will also have a chance to express your perspective and concerns of the case with the CFI.
